Why Should My Dog Be Groomed Regularly?
Your Dog is a member of the family, isn’t he? Then you have a natural concern for his health and well-being. A well groomed dog is not only cooler in the summer, but also warmer in the winter. His skin will be healthier thus creating a more attractive coat. Your dog will not only look and feel good, he’ll smell good too. Regular grooming is even more important for spotting problems that might require a vet’s attention (eye, ear, or skin disorders).
Is Grooming Painful For My Dog?
Certainly not for those who are groomed regularly. I’ve found that emotionally, dogs enjoy the routine at well as the attention. Physically, it’s a lot like having your own hair done. Dogs who have been neglected are most always matted or have skin problems. De-matting can be painful and so I recommend the “humane clip” for such cases. Stress can be a real problem for the uneducated dog. My objective is to make the grooming experience pleasant for all.
Do You Tranquilize?
NO, NO, emphatically no! Most people cannot imagine that groomers can control each and every lively canine long enough to put on an impeccable “do” without using some magic potion. An understanding of canine behavior coupled with large amounts of patience is the only magic I brew! There just aren’t any secrets to it. Besides, any professional knows administering medication without a license is illegal.
What If My Dog Gets “Upset” When He Has To Go To The Groomer?
Who is really upset? Remember that your behavior is “read” by your pet. If you are positive about your dog’s grooming then he will be too. His greatest desire is to please you, but you must help him understand that your leasing him to be groomed is necessary and only temporary. Here are a few suggestions— · If you are fearful about having your dog groomed, please call me. I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions and you might like to visit beforehand. · When you make your appointment: Plan in advance so that the grooming day is not rushed. Allow your dog plenty of time to do his business. Before departure, ask him quietly “Do you want to go?” All dogs know that tone of voice and it will help put them in an eager or positive frame of mind. (Many of my clients ask their dogs if they want to go see “Aunty Gloria” and the dogs bark and run to the car!) · When you arrive, take time to introduce your dog to me. Reassure him that it’s “okay” (You approve) and that he must “stay”. Make your departure brief (be sure to tell him he’s a good dog before you go. Thus your dog will resigned to the grooming ahead—and will be confident of your return. The greatest teaching aide for dogs is consistency—regular grooming relieves the dog’s stress therefore the owner’s anxiety.) · Try to pick up as soon as he is finished. If your pet needs to stay all day, please inform us when making the appointment
